“Bartender, get me another scotch on the rocks will you”, he said in a rather gruff voice, setting down his empty glass impatiently. He had a rough day, a rough week; everything was going wrong in his life at the moment. He just lost his job due to Covid. It felt empty as though the universe was rethinking out what was next in store for him and he was left in a stagnant or waiting zone for things to happen. Suddenly the crowds started to pour into the small dimly lit café-bar. It was around 11 pm and he heard laughter and voices from behind. A young group of dancers was making their way to the center stage in the café. The Makuta and Bongo drums were set up in the corner along with other musical instruments. Cuban cigars lay neatly on the counter in a wooden box. He just got in last night, took a swim in the ocean and lay on the beach all day. Cuba sounded like a great idea to help clear his head. The tempo picked up and the band started playing Latin rhythms of Rumbas and Salsas. Lights dimmed. It was a Masquerade tonight. There was an energy and excitement in the room. He saw her as she gracefully but flirtatiously danced on the floor. He approached her and it felt like an instant connection. She immediately captivated him with a big smile. Their bodies swayed to the rhythm of the beat. She smelled off tropical flowers, tangerine and fig. At midnight she left hurriedly dropping a red scarf; a scented reminder of herself. He knew he would have to come back and look for her again.
